Michael J Houghton
Dr Michael Houghton is a Lecturer in the Department of Nutrition, Dietetics and Food and Research Fellow in the molecular nutrition lab at the Victorian Heart Institute, both at Monash University. He currently coordinates a unit exploring nutrition controversies for the Bachelor of Nutrition Science programme and a unit covering advanced food, nutrition and health for the Master of Food Science and Agribusiness programme. His research focuses on the regulation of metabolism by diet, especially the reduction in chronic disease risk by bioactive components such as polyphenols, by measuring biomarkers at the systemic level and investigating mechanisms at the cellular level. He has expertise in cell culture techniques, biochemical assays, ion chromatography, droplet digital PCR and nanocapillary Westerns. His research can be grouped under three areas: cellular glucose, lipid and energy metabolism; carbohydrate digestion and postprandial glycaemia; and gut physiology. He is co-supervising three PhD students and recently co-supervised one to completion.
