Michael J Houghton

Dr Michael Houghton is a Lecturer at Monash University in the Department of Nutrition, Dietetics and Food and the Molecular Nutrition Research Lab Lead at the Victorian Heart Institute. He has coordinated various units - from the foundational biochemistry of nutrition science to population nutrition and nutrition controversies - for the Bachelor of Nutrition Science and Master of Food Science and Agribusiness programmes at Monash. His research focuses on the regulation of metabolism by diet, especially the reduction in chronic disease risk by bioactive components such as polyphenols, by measuring biomarkers at the systemic level in vivo and investigating mechanisms at the cellular level in vitro. His research can be grouped under three areas: cellular energy metabolism; carbohydrate digestion and postprandial glycaemia; and gut physiology. He has supervised four PhD students and four Honours students.
