Jochen Schmid
I am a PhD student in the Obesity Research Lab of Prof. Katharina Timper at the Department of Biomedicine of the University Hospital Basel and University of Basel, Switzerland. I received my Master of Science degree in Biotechnology from the Management Center Innsbruck, Austria, in collaboration with Roche pharma research and early development in Penzberg, Germany. In 2018, I received my Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of Tübingen, Germany.
I joined Katharina Timper's lab in 2021 to study astrocytes in the central and systemic regulation of energy metabolism. My research focuses on elucidating the impact of pyruvate oxidation in astrocytes following ablation of the mitochondrial pyruvate carrier 1 both in vitro and in vivo.
In addition to my research, I'm an active member of the PhD Club of the Department of Biomedicine Basel and help organize PhD student retreats and social events for students.
