Alexis R Diaz Vegas 4th Metabolic Diseases; Breakthrough Discoveries in Diabetes & Obesity Meeting 2024

Alexis R Diaz Vegas

I am a cell biologist focused on dissecting the role of mitochondria in metabolic diseases. I obtained a PhD from The University of Chile in 2018, where I utilized a range of cell and molecular tools in both cell and animal models to study the role of mitochondrial calcium uptake, mitochondrial dynamics, and mitophagy in muscle degeneration and insulin signaling in skeletal muscle. In 2018, I joined the Advanced Centre for Chronic Diseases (ACCDIS) in Chile as a postdoctoral researcher to investigate the role of mitochondrial-endoplasmic reticulum interactions in cardiac dysfunction induced by insulin resistance. This role provided the opportunity to further refine my skills in mitochondrial biology and cardiometabolic diseases. In 2019, I joined the University of Sydney as a research fellow. Here, I explored how mitochondrial reactive oxygen species contribute to insulin resistance in skeletal muscle and adipocytes. Currently, I lead the mitochondrial biology group, focusing on mitochondrial proteostasis to treat metabolic disorders.
